The Library Media curriculum reinforces and enhances classroom instruction, provides access to recreational and informational reading materials and provides time, place and materials for students to apply, organize and synthesize information in interdisciplinary units of study.
Kindergarten Course Description:
Students will learn the basics of the library media center and how to use it. They will learn different types of stories, fiction and nonfiction. By the end of year, the expectations will be that they know all parts of the book, which books are for pleasure and which are for information. Literature studies focus on award winning picture books, folktales (Fables and Creation Stories) as well as notable authors and illustrators.
Course Competencies:
· Discuss library routines and procedures
· Demonstrate how to take care of library materials
· Discuss the roles of authors and illustrators (An author tells a story using words while an illustrator tells a story using pictures)
· Locate the parts of the book (title, title page, cover, spine, barcode)
· Identify fiction books (Books that are read for pleasure and tell a story)
· Identify non-fiction books (Books about real people, places and things that provide information)
· Identify differences between fiction and non-fiction materials
· Explore creative ways to respond to literature
· Discover ways to retell stories (acting it out, using puppets, etc.)
First Grade Course Description:
First grade learns how to check out books, locate materials, identify parts of the book and story elements, sequence stories, differentiate fiction from non-fiction, and write a story. Literature studies focus on fiction/nonfiction, folktales, notable authors and illustrators.
Course Competencies:
· Demonstrate the appropriate care and handling of materials
· Follow the policies of the school library media center
· Demonstrate a working knowledge of the alphabet
· Identify a specific area of the Everybody section when given a specific letter of the alphabet
· Identify the basic parts of a book (cover, spine, pages, title, author, illustrator, title page)
· Classify items into nonfiction or fiction categories
· Sequence events after listening to a story
· Respond to picture graphics relating to a story through the arts, discussion, or writing
· Work as a whole group learning guided inquiry research practices
Second Grade Course Description:
Students are encouraged to become familiar with the areas of the library media center and to take care of materials. Literature studies focus on fiction/nonfiction, folktales (Fairytales) and notable authors and artists.
Course Competencies:
· Describe how the everybody section is organized
· Locate a book by a specific author within the everybody section
· Define characteristics of fiction and nonfiction
· Begin practicing guided inquiry research in small groups
· Use graphic organizers
· Identify various forms of literature
· Show appropriate information in a visually pleasing product
· Practice log-in procedures on all school level technology.
Third Grade Course Description:
Third grade library media curriculum focuses on information skills, fostering responsible independence in both the selection and use of information as well as technology. Students are expected to use the OPAC with the Dewey Decimal Classification System to locate materials and work to create the self-sufficiency and the confidence needed to allow students to find things for themselves. Literature studies focus on fiction/nonfiction and folktales (Legends, Tall-Tales and Myths, notable authors and artists.
Course Competencies:
· Retrieve a fiction book by author
· Retrieve a nonfiction book about a particular subject using a call number
· Master log-in procedures for all school technology
· Apply appropriate research skills, internet safety skills
· Practice guided inquiry research in small groups
· Compare and contrast specified sources of information
· Explain which source meets an identified need
· Utilize a variety of electronic sources
· Utilize the school library media center regularly for recreational reading and reference materials.
Fourth Grade Course Description:
Students utilize print and non-print resources to retrieve information to support research. Students will learn how to participate in small groups both online and in the LMC. Production, writing elements, and the ethical use of materials are also covered in library media units.
Course Competencies:
· Effectively locate materials by using systems of classification
· Match resources to topic of interest or need and select appropriate media by identifying an individual purpose
· Evaluate the content of specific print, non-print, and online sources to determine accuracy and relevance of content
· Apply and practice the guided inquiry research method.
· Practice using courtesy and teamwork in independent small group research
· Use appropriate graphic organizers to record relevant information
· Show appropriate information in a visually pleasing product
· Abide by the law in the use of information. (Use own words to capture concepts and avoid plagiarism)
Fifth Grade Course Description:
Students will demonstrate competence in organizing, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating information sources. Students will be working in small groups as part of the social learning that takes place at this age-level. Students will demonstrate fluid intelligence by applying knowledge and adapting information as they utilize new applications.
Course Competencies:
· Demonstrate competence in moving from one medium to another.
· Actively participate in group work, by doing assigned part with accuracy, promptness and courtesy.
· Effectively locate materials by using systems of classification
· Match resources to topic of interest or need and select appropriate media by identifying an individual purpose
· Evaluate the content of specific print, non-print, and online sources to determine accuracy and relevance of content
· Apply and practice the guided inquiry research method.
